Frustrated with HP OpenView Documentation!

Posted by Vivek Agarwal on August 22, 2007

Recently I have been looking into HP Software (formerly OpenView) as we have an opportunity to create an IT dashboard for a customer that uses several management products from this HP product suite. We are looking at integrating data from HP OpenView Operations (OVO), HP Network Node Manager (NNM), HP OpenView Performance Insight (OVPI), and HP OpenView Internet Services (OVIS). Rather than tying the dashboard directly to the database, we would prefer to interface to these products at a higher level. While skimming through the HP site, I discovered HP Operations Dashboard – a product that does integrate data from all the fore-mentioned products. I have been trying to absorb as much information as I can about the dashboard product and the other underlying OpenView products so that I can make the right choices. However, HP certainly does not make it easy!

They have no website for HP Software that comes close to the IBM DeveloperWorks site nor do they have InfoCenters a la IBM products. HP is certainly doing a great job of making me appreciate IBM’s documentation! 🙂 Also third-party coverage by magazines of these products is scarce to non-existent as far as I can tell.

However, after spending a significant portion of the day scrounging the web for information, I have managed to find some resources that have been useful. Hoping that I can make some sense quickly so that we can move on with scoping the dashboard project and get it rolling!

    Hi sir,
I also want to learn about OpenView, especially NNM.

I’ve been searching the documents, found a very small number and still inadequate informations about it. Would you share with me the resources you have found? I will be very grateful for your kindness. Thanks!

Hello, I was shock to hear this informtion concerning HP OpenView documentation. I am a former HP employee. the documentation is clear and very detailed. I found from working in the HP response center please just don’t read. most technical people want a quick answer. ask me any question from NNM, OVO, OVPI, OVPA, and any smart-plug-in. I will show the answer in the HP documentation.

Wow, two comments in a day and both are at opposite ends of the spectrum!

First, let me address Raymond’s comments about OpenView documentation being clear and detailed. I will not dispute the fact that some of the HPOV manuals that I have read do fit this category. What I am referring to in my post is that there is very little in terms of articles/how-to guides/tutorials for OpenView products. And that there is no resource similar to developerWorks in the HP product space. For somebody just getting started with HPOV, these would be invaluable resources.

In answer to Bayu’s comment, as Raymond says above, I do think the product manuals are a good resource at http://support.openview.hp.com/selfsolve/manuals. I have also found some useful presentations on the HP Software Universe website. Additionally, for an HPOV family overview, I just recently stumbled upon a book titled “HP OpenView System Administration Handbook: Network Node Manager, Customer Views, Service Information Portal, OpenView Operations” at http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0130352098. It seems like it would be good reading – I have ordered it but have yet to read it. I have not had the time to delve too deeply into the HPOV details as other team members are/will be doing so. This is all I can think of at the moment! All the best.

    Vivek~

Thought I would chime in since I work with the same Openview tools and am currently having dashboard troubles as well.

In my environment the exective management thought CIC (Cisco Information Center) would be best, but HP does not have any native hooks into the product in the manner in which we need to access the data flow so we are in the middle of having to purchase OVU to translate the alarms up. The reason I bring this up is at some point you need to start determining if the benefit will really be worth the investment. In my case, I would have scrapped the project considering the variables in the equation and the target audience.

I find more value making sure all the tools are integrated and have the operators use Operations as the high level view. Upper management than can be notified of major issues via the ticketing system. This way middle management never gets caught unaware of an incident which a dashboard can sometimes create.

In reference to your documentation query I agree wholeheartedly. I’m runnning a skeleton crew with the four tools on two seperate networks and when you need an answer HP Support is usually not that helpful or the documentation did not take into account the anamoly observed. All in all, the structure of the HP Software division appears to directly support their consultant division versus their customers which is good business from their perspective. Hopefully you have some good staff working on these tools.

    Hey Nex,

Thanks for your input and insights! Well – at this point, we are certainl y marching down the HP Operations Dashboard route. I think we should be able to make it work for us inspite of the limited information that is in the public domain.

OVOW (or OVOU) certainly has a lot of functionality from the operator perspective that may make it the central tool in an operator’s arsenal.

I hope to write more as my team makes progress with the implementation.

    Regards, Vivek.

    Hi People,
While searching for the NNM documents, i have found several, when tried to download it, i couldn’t as they all say that the document is corrupted and won’t get opened. I have just joined a team where the project is related to HP openview. I don’t have any knowledge in this field and i would like to know more. If any of you guys have good information or link of HP NNM please share it with me.

    Abhinav,

After having looked into HP Operations Dashboard more closely, I must say that it is far from perfect; given a choice I would avoid it. Look at other options.
